Would you pick a career path for your child or you will trust them to make the best choice for themselves?

All parents want their children to do well in life, this isn’t why some don’t leave the decision of choosing a career all to their children. They often step-in in making such decisions for them, mostly because of their experience in life.

Every child has the right to choose his or her own career, and sure have the right to live their dreams. A child will know his or her interests and abilities better than anyone else. They know their subjects and areas of interest and thus, can decide his or her career path quickly. If children choose a career according to the wishes of their parents, they will have a boring academic life as they would face a lack of interest. College life is the best phase of a student’s life. To enjoy this phase and make it more interesting, a child should choose his/her career path. If you follow a career path chosen by your parents and which is not of your interest, you will have to meet a lot of challenges and pressure. To avoid such situations, choose a career which interests you the most.

I think it’s great when people choose a career where their strengths and passions combine. Parents should desist from treating their child as an extension of themselves. Your child is a unique individual. They are not you. The things that interest you might not interest them. Many parent force career paths on their children just because they feel it’s the best for them or they (parents) wanted to go through that career in life but never had the chance, so they see their children as a way to live their dreams. Parents should help their child discover their interests, strengths and passion. You can do this by exposing your child to various activities that pique that interest and can help boost their strength. Be supportive of your children in their career decisions, only your child knows his or her strength and capacity.
