We can punish ourselves every day and with every breath. Self punishment is about beliefs, values and attitudes. We can blame others as much as we like – but nothing, nothing compares to you, blaming yourself for what you are and man, self-punishment is profound.
Self-punishment does not work. When it seems like it works, it’s only because something else has awakened your self-awareness, triggered empathy, or activated self-discipline. Self-punishment itself does not do what it promises, not by a long shot.
If you have a habit of punishing yourself, you likely do so through a process of overreacting to mild to moderate failures, flaws, and disappointments.
