If it reaches my employer that I fought with my colleague-although outside work-can this get me sacked?

It is so unusual for co-workers to fight at work or after work. If it happened once, it can happen again. The two of you seemed to lack a sense of respect for each other. Your employer may want to terminate the employment of you both and understandably so. One thing that should be a concern along with the possibility of losing your job is thinking about the altercation. Understanding the cause to make sure nothing like this happens again should be a top priority for you.
At work or not, you always have a right to defend yourself. Since you know this individual from work, you might be able to use your employers harassment policy to complain about your colleague. A word to the wise, though. I believe those policies are rarely effective. Research appears to support a conclusion that they backfire on the complainant more often than not. So, make sure your company acts with integrity on these complaints before going that route.
