I ordered a takeout from a local restaurant around my neighborhood, I was surprised when I was requested to leave a tip. Isn’t it the case that tips work only when you get a server? I didn’t get a server, why should I leave a tip?
Would you leave a tip if you order takeout at a restaurant even though you didn’t have a server?

Packaging the takeout order is a service. They have to review your order, whether you made the order via mobile/online or you walked in. While I do agree it’s not the full-service of a waiter/waitress, it is still a service being provided. Also to note that pre-covid take-out wasn’t really a norm. However, during covid many rely on take-out and it should be recognized and appreciated with tipping.
In an nutshell, if there is an option to tip for service, and it was good then do so. It doesn’t have to be a great tip, but some form of additional monetary appreciation is nice gesture and helps pay the bills.
It is a very common misconception that when you do take out there is no service rendered. Usually the person doing your take out is a server m. They may not be waiting on you at a table but they are back there boxing up your order, trying to make sure everything you ordered is there. they also are preempting what you may need from condiments to utensils etc. They bagging it up all nice so it travels safely to your home. Meanwhile, it’s taking time away from their regular guests sitting down who do tip. When I don’t suggest you should tip 20% but at least 10% is greatly appreciated.
