It might be difficult because you’re used to being in that environment. Toxic or not, you’ll miss them initially. You will feel guilty because you’ve been programmed to feel badly when choosing what’s right for you. They will try to suck you back in. They well lie about you, hoover you and goad you into arguments. I think that if they are toxic and you walk away, you’ll be better for it down the road. Many times people will make excuses for toxic family members. They will deal with because “they’re family”. I don’t think this is ok. Just because we’re family doesn’t mean I have to deal with your shit.

It has never really worked. You just need to understand that family love is unconditional at times. You can set your limitations, but that doesn’t always work either. So you need to decide what you are willing to invest. I threw out the scorecard a long time ago…I love them, they are messed up, I limit my time with them to keep it positive and have a reason to leave before it gets ugly. It is better when you have someone you can easily lean on during this period. Sub that if you’d be cutting off your folks, you could lean on such person as the loneliness will always hit you. But at the end of it all, it’s always worth your peace.
