My desktop suddenly started restarting updating every single time I put it on now. And the update takes a while before it completes. What is causing this?

Is your desktop windows? Windows 10 does not update everyday but there are frequent updates. So, if your computer is updating literally everyday or every time you put it on, I would consider an antivirus or taking your system to a specialist and making sure you don’t have some sort of malicious software running in the background.
Windows 10 checks for updates once per day. It does this automatically in the background. Windows doesn’t always check for updates at the same time every day, varying its schedule by a few hours to ensure Microsoft’s servers aren’t overwhelmed by an army of PCs checking for updates all at once. If Windows finds any updates, it downloads and installs them automatically.
