I think it is due to the mentality most of them have, some of them were raised believing it takes money to make money and you have to fake it until you make it, and the rest of them are just ‘wanna-bees’, trying to keep up with the Joneses’. What they both usually lack is a well thought out business plan. Certain poor people either do not want to be discriminated or they just want to fool themselves.

The act of masking poverty is a very common phenomenon that is present everywhere, irrespective of the city. It is largely caused by the society, how people view the poor and the rich. Perhaps if the elite stops judging the impoverished of society by their own standard, and tries to empathize with the psychological effects of financial pressure and uncertainty, they can better understand the financial decisions of the poor. Society, and poor people themselves, might realize that their lifestyles are actually more resourceful, that they do not often waste money on things that they don’t need, and that they have deep bonds with their family and neighbours which enrich their lives. Without experiencing so much external pressure to save face, poor people might be able to regain their self-respect and pursue more sustainable methods of evading poverty.
