The prison system is such a complicated one; an uncle who once worked in a federal correctional facility told us about how superior inmates ride the little ones. It’s even more sad that even the Officer cannot exactly handle them, they just sort of do whatever they like.

Prisons, especially, in Colorado, are filled with alot of drug addicts, alcoholics and people who have committed crimes while under the influence or to support their habit. Sure, there are gangs mostly divided along racial lines but unless you’re involved with them or allow yourself to become involved somehow, generally speaking theres no reason for them to bother you. Im assuming you were referring to being physically tough which you dont have to be to survive in prison. But, if youre not mentally tough when you get there you’ll likely learn to be because it is more mentally and emotionally challenging than physically by a long shot.
People in the outside world don’t understand that there is an almost identical culture inside the walls of every prison. Everyone is considered one of two classes. You’re either an Inmate, new to the system, refuse to conform to the system, or just an ignorant fool that will eventually be taught what he will and will not be allowed to do within this culture. Or, you’re a Convict. Usually an old timer. He has fought his battles and set his boundaries. Convicts normally run the system. They don’t like ignorant inmates coming into their world causing problems, which interferes with their money making businesses in the prison, being gambling, making Julep (alcohol), running sissies (prostitution), and thefts. If an inmate begins causing problems which bring more Officers into an area, most convicts will shut down the problems before Correction Officers have to. If Officers get involved and a convict loses money, you will find either a badly beaten inmate on your next shift, or a dead inmate.
