The placenta is very nutritious which is important for a new mother animal who will need to stay in one place for a while and provide milk to her young. There are also lots of hormones and some people think that ingesting the placenta gives a hormonal signal to the body that the birth is over and its time to close off the blood vessels to stop the bleeding. Also, in the wild, having a lot of blood around you is a good way to attract predators. Consuming it gets rid of that problem.
There are different reasons which can also be said to be benefits of dogs eating their pups’ placenta. For one, it aids with breast milk secretion. The hormones that come with eating placenta also help the uterus to contract, speeding up the birth of the remaining puppies. It helps the dog’s uterus get back in shape. Then the nutrients, eating the placenta provides the dog mom necessary nutrients needed after birth.
