The Korean people are so all about changing every part of their body— almost as if they live for that. I am not against plastic surgery at all, but can someone at least explain the Koreans obsession with plastic surgery.
The Korean society tends to have a very narrow set of facial features that set the standard for beauty in South Korea. These specific set of features include double eyelids or a v-shaped jawline etc among others. In fact, double eyelid surgery is very common among the Koreans, both males and females. In order to set into that narrow criteria for beauty, Koreans tend to go for surgeries. Also the society is very cautious about looks and emphasize the maintenance of good looks as such. Another reason that promotes surgery is that the employees are hired or given a job based on looks, a better looking person is more likely to get a job. Even the job application forms require a photo on it in South Korea and you get photo shopped pictures(without asking for it) at regular photo booths and can use them even in government documents like passports and ID cards; they basically ‘fix’ the faces to the Korean standards. The society in Korea is quite open to the surgery as well.
The Korean beauty standards are considered high to Korean people because the features Koreans consider beautiful are not something many Koreans are born with.
For example, the Koreans prefer big eyes and sharp nose which are features that many Koreans do not have. If white people’s standard of beauty include small eyes and flat nose, then that standard would be considered high to white people, simply because many white people do not have those features.
Koreans live in a very competitive society and they keep striving for extremes instead of learning the art of moderation. That has taken a toll on them when it comes to the pressure of looking good till they have to succumb to plastic surgery. Even when applying for jobs, they are discriminated by their looks, so it almost becomes a necessity to have plastic surgery in order to have a normal life in Korea. The extremism in Korea seems to be at the point of no return now, unless it collapses in the future like some ancient civilizations. Almost all Korean idols look a certain way. Most of them may be conventionally attractive, but they don’t leave an impression because most of them look very similar to each other.
