Whenever I take a late-afternoon nap, I wake up with a bad banging headache, why?

Naps are supposed to make you feel better, rested, alert, refreshed. But sometimes the opposite happens, which is also quite annoying. Having a headache after nap seems like a bad joke, yeah? Why do I always get headache after an afternoon nap?

There could be several reasons. Many people actually feel better when they wake up after a short nap in the afternoon. You can avoid a lot many ailments if you do a bit of yoga in the morning every day. Cyber related stress can be one of the causes. Excessive consumption of water, and food can cause headaches. Avoid ice creams and very cold soft drinks or cold water. Some have the habit of sleeping in A/c rooms while fans above their heads on at great speed. This could cause head ache due to lack of oxygen. Sleeping face down on the pillows may contribute to improper breathing. Gastric problems too cause headache. All these are minor reasons . Test your eye sight. If there is no problem in the eyes and head ache persists consult your general doctor.

It’s not clear why this happens, but it may be due to chemicals in the brain being altered as a result of your sleep-wake cycle being disrupted.
Napping during the daytime can give you a migraine headache. Disrupted sleep patterns can also trigger a headache, for example if you’re a shift worker or you have jet lag. If you’re not breathing properly, this not only interferes with your sleep but can also increase the risk of headaches once you wake up.
