I am to travel to India in two weeks, it’s about work. With how I’m looking at things, I’ll be there for a while. I’ve been reading to know more about India, I am gay. India frowns against gay people. What are the reactions I should expect? How can I deal with such reactions pending the period I’ll be there.
Being openly gay might attract a lot of attention to you, and I’m sure you don’t want that. Indian penal code prohibits homosexual relationships. India is a very conservative and homophobic country, hence why they don’t welcome homosexuals with open arms. If you intend to have a peaceful living during your stay, it is best not to make your sexuality so open among the locales. You will surely face lots of ignorance and social ostracism. However, in the urban cities, you’re more likely to be on your own without anybody disturbing you. As a foreigner, you will be treated specially, mostly with respect.
In as much as India decriminalized homosexual relationship in 2018, indulging in sexual relationship in public attracts penal punishment and you can get in trouble. However, whatever you do indoor has no business with the law enforcement agencies or even judgmental individuals. You can engage in gay relationships with your partner, no restrictions for that but it should be consensual and also in private. If it is the case that you will be in India for a while and not that you’re settling down permanently, it is advisable to not make public your sexuality for the period you’d be around. Keep yourself reserved with whomever you will be with. India is a very nice place that you will enjoy so far you don’t break any of their rules. And as a foreigner, you will definitely attract lots of attention and special treatments.
