What are the types of steroids that are often prescribed for pregnant women and what are they used for?
Steroids during pregnancy may sound scary but some are absolutely safe. Expecting mothers can take steroids- only on prescription- for numerous pre-existing health conditions like asthma, lupus, and skin problems. They are mostly prescribed by a doctor when they feel that the pregnant woman may go into preterm labour. The use of steroids in such a case helps in the maturity of the baby’s lungs, brain and intestine. However, steroids are mostly used for lung maturity.
There are very few conditions that may require a pregnant women to take steroid injections during pregnancy. However, it must be under strict medical supervision and prescription. Conditions such as autoimmune disorders, prematurity of the foetus, etc., can cause pregnant women to take some prescribed steroids. Any steroid taken out of the doctor’s order and prescription will leave a pregnant woman and the foetus in danger.
