What is the best age to register a child for ballet?

  • 1

My child has been showing interest in ballet; I’d like to register her into a ballet school, but my husband thinks it’s still very early for her. She’s 2 btw.

2years is quite too early for a child to get registered into ballet. Children don’t really start practicing ballet in particular properly until the age of 8, before this they are usually learning musicality rather than technique.
By the age of 8 most children have the strength and ability to begin ballet classes; as Pre-ballet classes are often offered to children between the ages of 4 and 8. Pre-ballet classes are classes that focus more on the technical aspects of ballet. Your child will be taught the basic techniques at a controlled pace appropriate for their level. Most teachers believe that the attention spans of 3-year-olds are too short to deal with, and prefer parents to wait until a child is at least 4 before allowing the child to enroll. However, formal ballet training should not be introduced until the age of 8.

I totally agree with Kacy, real ballet training doesn’t begin before age 7/8 when both the mind and body are mature enough to handle engaging and holding turnout. At age 5 there is pre ballet which is a nice way for children to get acclimated to taking ballet classes but really not necessary. At age 4 or younger it’s just playing ballet and kind of a waste of money. The real work doesn’t begin until age 7. If one is thinking of a ballet career, age 10/11 is the latest for a girl to start and not be handicapped by being a late starter. Boys can start later to age 13/14 but they don’t dance in pointe shoes and have different requirements in professional ballet.
