Taking people’s word for it is a great way to start with reducing and ultimately preventing hate speech. A lot of people tend to hide under the umbrella of “I have freedom of speech” only for them to be misusing and hurting others in the process. It’s crazy how the world rotates, hate crimes online are now even higher than offline hate crimes, you see people seriously hating on persons that they’ve never met before, but just because of the fact that they have access to that person through the internet, they say whatever and go Scot free. Can we actually start from there? Punish hate crimes offenders, both online and offline. Only then, can hate crimes be really reduced
There are very few places where there’s an actual punishments for hate crimes. A lot of states claim to be against hate crimes and even go as far as proclaiming it as an offense, but what’s an offense if there’s no punishment? It’s high time government really started melting out punishment for hate crimes, treat hate crimes as the crimes that they truly are and give out punishment, accordingly.
