I just got a new job, I’m few weeks into the job and I can already feel it’s exactly a friendly atmosphere for homosexuals. Should I keep to myself or tell my employer?
While full disclosure of your sexuality can help you earn fair treatment from your colleagues, kindly note that it can also earn you a termination. If your company has zero tolerance for homosexuals individuals and they did not know this before hiring you, best believe they might have to terminate your employment with them. However, if your company has nothing against homosexuality but its workers just seem to have little to zero regards for homosexuals, you may of course walk up to your employer to let him/her know about your orientation and how you’re not comfortable with how your colleagues speak about homosexuals. A better environment might be created. And that’s great!
If you already notice that the environment is hostile to homosexuals, there really is no point exposing yourself to such hostility. This is because it will entirely mess you up and negatively affect your work performance. If it’s not required that you publicly announce your sexuality at your place of work, you can decide to just keep such information with yourself. If you feel you may not be able to handle the environment, I guess you will have to find another job. Your happiness matters a lot, if you’re not happy at your place of work, you can’t deliver well.
