Should community service be made compulsory in schools?

My cuz was raging about the new development in her school which is the introduction of strict community service. This involves helping to organize sale and donate the profits to charity, going to local areas to help the kids read and write, help delivering items to patients in local hospitals and so on. Each student can choose whichever they want to participate in. Of course, there is penalty for any student who lag behind. Should schools make community service compulsory for students even though it may have good effects on the beneficiaries?

Community service is not always the same as volunteering, as it is not always done willingly. If a school is strictly making her students to involve in such activities, I think they’re rubbing off the satisfaction the students might get from helping their community. As the students will be performing a non-paid job, it’s only natural that they also get to derive self-satisfaction in doing it. The satisfaction won’t come if the services are enforced on the students. It really is unwise for schools to make community service compulsory for students, it should be a voluntary thing-a choice. A lots of schools advise their students to engage in community services, and even go to the extent of rewarding such students, but will never enforce those activities on the students.

I am of the opinion that schools should make community service compulsory, but of course at convenient hours. Community service will make students get involved with their community and also enlighten them better. Honestly, a lot of people don’t cherish or enjoy something until they’re being compelled into doing it. Community services are enjoyable by the time you finally get deeply involved. I mean the joy you get when you help others, the satisfaction you get knowing you’re contributing to your community. The school is definitely helping them to cherish their community better.
