Should celebrities start suing press/media for defamation?

Celebrities are often exposed to violation of privacy—  especially from press people and the media publishing stories about them without proper investigation.

They could do so if they wanted to, but many of the gossips that are often tagged “defamation” often have strings of truth in them but lack proof. if celebrities would sue for defamation, they would have to prove that any false defamation was made willingly and maliciously in order to have any case. As a result the standard to bring a charge is very high and not worth litigation.

  2. Celebrities are public figures. So, in addition to proving defamatory statements to be false and the amount of damages suffered, they must prove that the defendant made them with actual malice, a difficult standard to meet. What majority of them sue for is death threats. As for death threats, that is a criminal matter first, and the judge or jury can order restitution for any monetary damages, so they are far less likely to be the subject of lawsuits than defamation.
