Social media is free, although most platforms offer paid advertising options. Start by choosing two or three platforms to use. You don’t want to stretch yourself too thin by creating author profiles on every site. Which platforms you choose is up to you. Work on building your fans and followers after taking the time to set up your account. The best place to start getting followers are people you know in real life. You can also join writing communities. There are often posts for “like for like” on them you can participate in to help both grow your followers and gather new industry connections. Use social media to engage your audience with games and questions. Share news of your releases, sales, and upcoming events. You can also use social media to cross-promote your blog posts. Some blog hosts allow you to set it up so posts are automatically shared to popular social platforms like Twitter and Facebook.
Publishing your own book is like starting a business. Just like in a new business, create a marketing plan and strategy based on the growth you’d like to see. Identify your competition? How can you be different than your competitors? I see self-published authors selling their work through booksellers and the book is lost amongst the thousands of other books that are for sale.
