Yes. The professional who explained narcissism to me had been treating someone I knew. The doctor first explained the complete lack of empathy in a narcissist saying, he has absolutely no idea what you are feeling, no empathy at all. Then he asked me to share with the narcissist how I felt during hurtful incidents. The narcissist thought that was a waste of time and refused to participate. Being so removed from empathy helps the offender to avoid a discomforting recognition of the pain they have caused. If you have empathy I think it’s very difficult to understand someone who has none and doesn’t want to develop empathy, unless you accept that the narcissist has no motivation to change especially since those changes would benefit someone else.
Everyone is wired differently, that doesn’t mean they’re mentally unstable. I don’t even understand why people throw the phrase “mentally unstable” around these days. Empathy is an advanced emotion. It would develop from basic trust for the unfortunate and continue to a motivation to help them. It would feel like you placed the poverty in you and felt what it were like to be low. This would summon the courage in you to act for their benefit.
