That can only happen if you have someone close to you who knows your SSN and your other personal info. The person who’s going to impersonate you in obtaining a loan is someone you know. It’s very odd that the thief chose a local credit union and a personal loan over a national bank and a credit card. Do you have any relatives in financial trouble with access to your SSN?
It’s very possible, especially if they have lots of info on you. I’ve had this happen. Just notify the credit union that it wasn’t you. If you document identify they they can take the hit away from your credit. I never bothered with that as it’s a long process with a lot of documentation. Eventually it just dropped off my credit report after a month or two. What really matters is somebody has your info. I would highly recommend freezing your credit, it’s free and easy.
