I personally disagree with that, I don’t think asking a man his age is fine. As to why it is rude to ask, I think that it implies that you have seen some incongruous look or behaviour that has made you question something personal and to ask outright is tantamount to saying “you are not normal… But I could excuse it if you are not the age I assumed”.
Are you two planning to date? If yes, I definitely would ask if interested, because I consider it to be an important factor in a relationship. But then, it might just be interest, because I have this sort of camaraderie with people born around my birth year where we can go down nostalgia lane about all the stuff that was cool when we were kids.
