Tampons are designed to be comfortable, so when properly inserted you wouldn’t really feel them even while swimming. If you are concerned about leakage during swimming, insert one prior to entering the pool and you should have no problems. I do this anytime I get on my period and I feel like swimming, and I’ve never had a problem, but I remember the fear of possibly seeing blood in the pool water. Pads are not practical for swimming as the absorbent gel beads will get full of water and might actually break out of the pad and float around the pool. It will become heavy and sag your swimsuit as well
Tampons are good for swimming. But I’m going to suggest using menstrual cup. I’ve found that tampons have worked well 95% of the time, but there have been a few heavy flow days where I’ve hopped out of the pool and had reddish water run down my legs. I don’t think it would have been immediately obvious to bystanders, but I did have to grab some disinfectant spray and a mop from the lifeguards to clean up the deck. Also, I found out that if I don’t tuck the sting away, it tends to bring in a little water. What I like to do is tuck the string during the swim to avoid that and change tampons after.
