Does God support divorce? How come there are a lot of Christians out there who are divorced?
They only allowance the Bible makes for divorce is for adultery. Meaning, if your spouse is unfaithful and cheats, you can divorce them and it will not be considered a sin. I have not found anything in Scripture that explicitly allows it or forbids it, but I have to think that getting a divorce from an abusive spouse would be okay too.
The only biblical grounds for divorce is adultery on the part of one’s spouse. When we make vows to stand by a husband or wife regardless of what may come, we are fully expected to uphold those promises.
The only exception to this rule that I can think of is in the Old Testament, in an instance where the Jews directly defied God’s command to not marry foreigners in order to keep their religious practices untainted by the pagan practices of the surrounding nations. They were commanded, all of them as a nation, to divorce their foreign wives, because they were never supposed to marry them to begin with.
