There’s is nothing wrong with a Cesarean birth when done in the right context. Cesarean births have saved the lives of countless women and infants and have many others from serious complications. The problem comes when cesareans are done on pregnant women in situations when they are not life saving and the risks outweigh the benefits. Cesareans carry more risks than vaginal birth, such as high risk of large blood loss, infection, complications from other organs being accidentally nicked and for the baby higher risk of respiratory problems, needing resuscitation or support at birth. When born by cesarean babies are first exposed to different bacteria and may form less beneficial colonies. Cesareans also delay a mother’s milk coming in by a day or 2 and make early breastfeeding difficult due to the abdominal pain which can make it hard to initiate breastfeeding and does impact on long term breastfeeding rates.
Cesarean’s generally take longer to recover from and have implications for any future births a woman might have. She’s got a much higher chance now of having another cesarean and has risks of the placenta being too adherent, or of the uterine scar rupturing.
A normal birth is more painful at the point you give birth, and can be long and draw out, whereas a caesarean is relatively painless until you try to move the next day when the anaesthetic has completely warn off, and you really feel pain like you have never felt pain before. Remember too that a caesarean is surgery. Apart from wondering if the pain will ever go, there is risk the wound will break open and get infected. If you forget to prepare for a caesarean your pubic hair will be shaved to a line below the normal level to keep it well away from the cut.
