I think studying should not be prescribed in no of hour, especially to a kid. Let them just learn the basics and learn how to learn. By specifying number of hours, I think somewhere in those little mind there starts creating a need to study just for the academics and may lose the actual essence of learning. I am not saying that a kid shouldn’t study ofcourse they should. But specifying how many hours they must study doesn’t seem right.
Okay, you may ask now how can even a kid know that they should study and that’s what you meant that how many hours should they study. Well, for that initially you can keep a target (max 1 hour) but please, let it don’t become a schedule done by you. Kids usually have lot of curiosity, that may it be in anything . Let that curiosity flow in studies. sometimes it depends on the educational environment but if it’s not permitting then start creating curiosity in them towards learning. That initiation is enough. I am damn sure they will learn, at least not because they should.

At age 8 years, there should not be any pressure. At any age, the time devoted to study is not important; it is how much you have understood that is. Each person will be able to grasp according to capacity. You bluff yourself (and others) by showing the number of hours you studied when you could have easily been daydreaming. There is lot of other things to learn. Let studying itself don’t become their world. Playing (it plays vital role in studying), enjoying their days, let them smile and cherish, learn morals(this includes everything. This is what important to learn when they are kids once they grasp, it will be in their roots) comic books and many other activities are there; let them even try these.
