It really depends on the dog and the circumstances in which you got it. I rescued a beautiful dog from the shelter. She was a wonderful dog who bonded with me before we even got home. It was the second time she had been in the shelter. Her most recent owners were an elderly couple who moved to assistant living and couldn’t take her. On the other hand, we took in a 2-year old dog directly from his previous owner. The first owner became homeless and was living in his car. He couldn’t take care of the dog anymore. He is a loving dog now, but it took him almost a year before he accepted that we were his owners now.
