Maintenance is the key to maximizing the benefits you get from your solar PV systems.
The ideal time to clean your panels with water is before 10a.m. and after 5p.m. Some basic things to keep in mind when cleaning your solar panel are: Use a non-abrasive cloth and biodegradable soap to get rid of dirt and muddy build-up on your panels. Avoid using water on the panels when they are hot for e.g. during mid-day. Avoid using sharp metal objects or harsh abrasive products to scrape off caked on materials such as bird droppings.
The most effective way to clean your solar panels is with a hose and a bucket of soapy water. Essentially, in the same manner you would wash your car at home. Because you don’t want to scratch the panels in any way, it’s best to use just water and a non-abrasive sponge to apply soapy water. Avoid using detergents if possible as these may streak the glass of the panel. Use of abrasive powders also risks scratching the panels. Given the nature of good quality solar panel glass, clean water and a little scrubbing with a coarse cloth covered sponge or soft brush should remove the most stubborn grime.
