It is possible to get a decent income out of Upwork, but you will have to invest time to build up your profile. Earning thousands of dollars alongside a day job is a dream you will not easily fulfill. To give you some idea, you can look at the current projects and the rates of people bidding on it. At a first glance, having a very common skill set, little experience and an asian name, you’re going to be pushed right to the lower end of the spectrum and you’ll compete with $5-10/h developers. If you work 100/h extra per month (which is really tough) you’ll earn $500-1000, but only if you find that much work and finish it within the allotted time. Before you stand out enough that you can raise your rate, it will take a few months at least.
What do you mean by fast money though? There is no fast money except you work hard and smart. To be honest, making money on upwork would depend on how long long it takes you to actually find or get a job and then the wait period for the payment which may be a week or a month. The sign-up process from what I recall does not take too much time so if for example, you signed up today submitted a connect and got a job with a week you would start earning within the week.
The competition on Upwork is pretty stiff though, even the most basic jobs get like 50+ proposals at least, so you may have to wait a while, but the jobs are legit and you probably will be able to find one, eventually.
