I took some tests recently and the doctor said I have resistance to quite a lot of antibiotics.
If you don’t take the full course, a lot more of the bacteria are exposed to the drug but not killed by it. They go on to make many more like themselves and will be somewhat resistant to that drug next time and over surprisingly few generations, can become highly resistant.
If you take the full course, you kill most of them; very few will survive to pass on whatever let them survive, so resistance will happen at a much slower rate. The single worst thing you can do in terms of encouraging antibiotic resistance is to stop taking the meds before you’ve taken the entire course that was prescribed.
Antibiotic resistance may develop through antibiotic resistant plasmids. These plasmids may be naturally present within a bacteria or may be acquired through conjunction, transformation, transduction. This is known as horizontal gene transfer. The bacteria may also develop resistance through mutations in their DNA during cell replication due to prolonged antibiotic exposure. So it’s better to take antibiotics within prescribed doses and consult doctor before taking.
