Often times, when people try to pass compliments, they do it with hidden contempt. Or even infuse hurtful comments in such praises or compliments. How do you respond to such situations?

Your reply doesn’t have to show that you can sense their insecurity. Be sincerely polite as possible. You smile and simply say “Thank You” while calmly walking away in silence. Knowing that their comment doesn’t break you nor let it make you. When somebody compromises their own integrity, do not ever allow them compromise yours.
If someone I know compliments me on something I know isn’t sincere But I know they are just fishing for a response, I usually smile and say thanks, It’s nice you think so, and leave it at that. I have found there is no sense in objecting or disputing with someone unless it’s totally not true. If that’s the case I still say thanks but I’m sure you are mistaken.
