I don’t have a spare key, and my door is jammed. How do I try and open it before finally calling calling a professional to fix it for me.

First, I feel you’re at the wrong place seeking for help. Where you should be now is YouTube, ask your question on YouTube and you’ll see a lot videos that will come in handy. All the best.
I would suggest you get a regular bedroom lock. They don’t have a key, and it’s easy to pick. It comes with a tool to open if locked and you can’t get in. The usual place to keep this tool is directly above the outside of the door on top of the door trim. You can also use a cabinet drawer that is used for odds and ends. There’s a little tiny hole in the center of the knob. Just insert the tool in the hole and push the tool inward and at the same time turn the knob and the door will open. If you’ve lost the tool you can use any type of stiff wire small enough to fit inside the tiny hole. Such as a straightened out safety pin, an awl, ice pick, maybe a coat hanger.
