why should I always suffer whenever my roommate cooks smelly food? How do I deal with that, considering that living alone is quite more expensive.

If you you two are very close and all, you may be able to get them to agree to cook something different on some particular day. Most people aren’t very sensitive to smells and get offended if anything is said to them. I had a similar situation several years ago with a neighbor. The first Christmas Eve after they moved in, they cooked something that smelled so bad that I ended up throwing up all night. They continued to cook horrible smelling food after that always made me nauseous. My friend who lived above them wrote them a note about it. I don’t know what she said in it, but the people just scrawled a rude word across it and returned it.
I ended up barricaded in my bedroom in the evening, with a blanket stuffed under the door. I had to use a space heater because the central heating would suck the stench in. I couldn’t eat in the rest of the apartment, so I moved my toaster and microwave into the bedroom so I could eat. I mentioned this to my landlord, but there was nothing he could do. I moved out when my lease was up. I hope things work out better for you, and your roommate turn out to be a decent person.
We don’t all love the same foods and some foods cooking can make leave some people drooling whilst others literally feel quite sick. When I smell pork cooking it makes me feel queasy yet I can still eat it. It’s a fact of life and you should not be made to feel bad for wanting to improve the quality of your life.
Some smells can make people feel nauseous; heights can make some people dizzy; tasting certain foods can make people feel ill, touching certain materials can repulse people, seeing certain things can give people anxiety and certain noises can make people fly into a rage. Our senses are strong and connect us to the world around us and of course certain things are going to impact us.
However, there is no nice way for you to bring this matter up without offending these people. You won’t be able to ask them to change the time they cook as that’s the time they want to cook their meal. You also can’t ask them to change what they cook because that’s what they want to eat. Unless there are others in your flat also complaining, then unfortunately you’re going to have to count your blessings and try to cope with it. For now, think about what you can do to lessen the impact on your evenings. If the smell is making you queasy when you’re trying to get to sleep, then invest in a small Air Purifier which will filter out the odours and place it near your bed. If it’s seeping into your whole apartment and you’re watching TV and it’s making you feel queasy, then buy a larger Air Purifier or two smaller ones (one for the bedroom and one in the living area). Buy and light some strong, fragrant candles or small incense burner which will eliminate some of the smell for you.
