There really is no place around me where I can take my plastics to for recycling purposes. How then do I reduce the usage?

I do not think there is any need to cut the usage of plastics. You only need to stop disposing it carelessly. There are no good ways of reducing plastic consumption. What choices do we have? Textiles? Paper? Metal? Glass? All these industries are far more polluting than plastic. Production of plastic is far more energy efficient and less polluting than any of the above material. It is the disposal that is a problem. If we simply have an organized method to dispose plastic and recycle the same, we will have the problem sorted out. Recycling technologies are available. Collection can be organized. What needs to be really worked upon is people’s habits. That is the most difficult part.
Do not use plastic kits and carry-bags. Use paper bags or cloth bags or jute bags. Do not use flex boards for advertisements and hoardings. Do not use plastic toys. Use paper or wooden toys. Do not use disposable ball pens. Use fountain pens made from stainless steel with nibs and liquid ink. Do not use plastic for upholstery in cars, planes, sofas and beds. Use cloth or leather for these purposes. Do not use plastic buckets and mugs in bathrooms. Use iron or aluminium buckets and mugs. Do not use plastic sponge in mattresses and cushions. Fill them with cotton.
