How best can one while away time in a creative way during a depressed state?

By doing what you love. I for one love to cook, big cooking, and invite friends over to come and eat with me. The cooking helps numb whatever depression I may be having and my friends coming over to eat will finally help get over the depression.
When I feel sad or depressed, I tend to get myself to clean up my apartment. Not just some sort of surface cleaning, I deep clean while playing music to lift up my soul. I do this to get my mind away from whatever is disturbing me, and during that moment of cleaning and listening to music, I am free of all disturbing thoughts. And it is very uncommon that I return to that depressed state after I finish cleaning. Cleaning helps me fight depression, you just have to figure out what up love doing, that is what you should do whenever you feel depressed.
