For one, do not teach any opening variations. Just make him/her solve plenty of chess tactics regularly. Show him some very attacking chess games and mating patterns. Teaching him or her opening variations will affect his positional knowledge and experience. Make sure that he/she solves a lot of chess tactics and mating patterns regularly on chess board.
Introduce each piece, one at a time. Show them how it moves and where it stands before moving to the next. Before beginning a game, set up the pieces and encourage the child to move the pieces around the board, gently correcting them if a piece is moved wrong. When you start playing, don’t try for a conclusion, just see who can take the most pieces before a king is checked. If they remain interested, start introducing the rules and strategies. Don’t ever let them win a game. Go easy on them. Show them where their mistakes are and suggest moves.
