Depression is really serious and it’s not going to go away until the person gets treatment or starts to help themselves in some way. You can encourage them to seek treatment and you can be there for them when they are going through tough times, but the harsh reality is that without treatment, self-help, etc. it’s not going to go away. You don’t state how severe the depression is, and the nature of untreated depression is that it will ebb and flow depending on the person’s circumstances. You might want to look into therapy for yourself too— it’s possible you had a parent with depression and felt unable to help them, as our romantic relationships are always mirroring to us what we need to resolve in ourselves.
So when someone is depressed. Only close relatives or family and friends can identify it. Try to identify the reason of depression. There will be a reason for depression. Once you have identified the root cause of depression. You need to know how much that person was involved in that cause and what are things that turned out wrong for the person. Never force to turn things or to change the thought. Take that person into confidence and assure them that you are there to help them and you will not let them struggle alone. We need to let them vent out everything they have in them and then try to explain them that not everything is in our control. Never be harsh on them and please don’t give up on such person once you have assured them that you will help them. Because, if you leave them after giving assurity then it will create more problem to the depressed person. Once you have decided to help them, work hard till they are fully out of depression. To help the person cope with depression is to let them know their self worth. People many time feel they are worthless and lose their hope. We need to create hope in such person.
