VGA is only nice to have for compatibility with old devices. There is no reason to use VGA, especially since doing to would involve converting from digital to analog and back to digital, which leads to some signal quality loss. The features of HDMI far surpass what can be done over analog connections, and VGA ports are essentially legacy at this point if not long ago.
HDMI is digital and VGA is analog. Digital provides better picture quality on LCD screens. When I first got an LCD monitor I initially hooked it up using VGA before switching to DVI, another digital connection, and with the DVI connection the screen was noticeable crisper. So do yourself a favor and use the HDMI over VGA if you have a choice.
