Gender discrimination is making a decision about some issue taking a person’s gender into account. It is almost always unnecessary, though there are occasional exceptions. For example, if you are hiring firefighters and you won’t even let women apply, that is unfair gender discrimination. You should let them apply even if only a little percentage of the applicants can pass the test. If you are casting characters in a play and one of the characters is female, it is legitimate to hold auditions only for women to play the part. You can, of course, hire a man to play the part if you want to; but men do not have an automatic right to be considered. Casting roles in dramas is a subjective aesthetic matter and fairness isn’t necessary.

I would say that no matter what gender you are, discrimination is shit. I do not condone any type of discrimination on the basis of gender, race, or sexual preference unless we are talking about your romantic partner in which case you are absolutely rightful to choose who you want to sleep with. Gender discrimination still occurs because sexist people still exist. Every generation gets more accepting, but gender discrimination, just like racism and homophobia, will exist until the end of time. However, things are not hopeless. There are few ways gender discrimination can be reduced, they are: making sure when hiring people you don’t judge by gender, when interacting with kids to always be tolerant, avoid stereotypes, shut down sexists with calm, rational logic, and treat everyone with respect.
