Naturally, dogs hate to be chained and it’s indeed not advisable to chain your dog for too long. I feel 3-4hours at a time is okay. Chaining a dog for way too long can make your dog aggressive and angry, cos he or she would be struggling to break off and indeed move around. Personally, I don’t understand people that get a dog just to leave it outside or alone majority of the time. You are your dog’s entire world. I just don’t understand it, my dog has literally never been left tied to anything unattended for 3hours.
Chaining your dog for way too long is an excellent way to nurture aggression. If a chained dog sees someone walk by, barks at him or her, and the person continues walking and leaves the dog’s sight, the dog will think that he told the person to leave and they obeyed. Every time this happens, it’s reinforced, and your dog may well start to exhibit guarding behaviours that can escalate into aggression. It’s much easier to prevent this than correct it. If you need to go out without your dog, you can chain or leave your dog indoors in a safe space.
