The world of mentally unstable people is a different type of world entirely. Which is why a mentally unstable person will not know they’re mentally unstable, in fact to them, we the “normal” ones are the abnormal ones, they see us the mentally unstable folks while they see themselves as “normal”. So, the same way we think we’re normal and they’re sick is the same way they also view us.
Some know their exact condition and can recognize its symptoms. Others have more and less lucid phases, where they go between knowing and not knowing. Others know that something is wrong with their minds but not what, or misattribute it to a bodily illness. Still others are in denial and believe they’re completely healthy, and/or that everyone else is mentally ill. I don’t know whether there are any conditions where a person categorically cannot recognize themselves as ill
