Disturbances of gut motility occur frequently under a highdose antacid regimen. Typical symptoms are diarrhea and constipation. They are due to the cations of the antacids. Aluminum causes constipation, magnesium induces diarrhea, and calcium has no definite motor effect.
Antacids are typically safe for most people. However, people with certain medical conditions should talk with their doctors before taking certain antacids that contain aluminum hydroxide and magnesium carbonate. If you take a lot of antacid, it might cause constipation.
