It depends on the reason; if you take self medicated drugs with the intent of harming or killing yourself, that’s self harm. The fact is, it’s not only drugs people self medicated on, they self medicate on different kinds of substance out there. Depression is common among users of these drugs. When depression and opiate use or abuse are combined, the results can be deadly. Self-medication can have a negative impact on mental health and does very little to treat the underlying condition. Recognizing forms of self-medication can help you understand how substance abuse may be related to depression and other mental health conditions.

If it is done intentionally due to desperation for better results of the drug or due to addiction then it’s not necessarily self-harm. Also, it’s not self harm if done unintentionally.
