Not all mental illness may be a risk of harm to others. In the majority of cases when a patient is involuntarily admitted to a psychiatric inpatient unit, it is not because the person is a risk to others. Rather, it is more often the case that the person is at risk of harming himself, as in the case of a depressed, suicidal patient. On a personal level you should seriously consider if ownership is right for you if you have a history. Before you get something think about what your plan is if you start having symptoms again.

There’s no problem with buying a gun if you have been treated, it is only if you have been declared mentally unstable by a judge or doctor, that’s only when it can an issue. I have bipolar disorder and I have been hospitalized twice voluntarily in the last 20 years, one of which was fall of 2020. I own many firearms and have had my concealed carry permit for the last 9 years. If you have any predisposition towards mental illness and want to own firearms I think it’s your duty to have a concrete plan to be able to get them out of the house should you have any bout of depression or any mental instability. There’s no shame in asking for help, and temporarily giving up ownership is much better than ending up dead because of a momentary bad situation. Having the plan in place and being able to put it into play before I became a danger to myself saved my life this fall.
