At what week is it too late to have an abortion?
I think it may vary from country to country, abortion at very late week is not allowed in my country. Abortion is allowed till the 10th week of pregnancy. Till that time, it’s done automatically, no questions asked. Anything after that, it has to be for medical reasons only, because it’s considered bad for mother, to have abortion really late. At 20 weeks upwards, baby is capable to survive on its own in intensive care unit. Unless for medical reasons of course. Mother’s life has always priority. At least in my country. But in some places, such as US, there are some clinics that still carry our abortion no matter how far you’ve gone.
Abortion is safe at any time, so long as you have it done in a medical facility with a good reputation, and are otherwise healthy. Depending on gestational age, there are risks with sedation of any kind, and medical procedures, in general. But those risks as no higher than if you have sedation for a dental procedure. Abortion is safe up to 9 weeks, medical abortion is safe and effective. Surgical abortion is easy up to about 12 weeks, but somewhat more complicated up to about 16 weeks.
