My friend had a breast reduction and breastfed her baby. She didn’t report any complications. But, that said- I have a friend who has never had surgery and really wanted to breast feed, but her supply couldn’t keep up with baby’s nutritional needs. You never know until you try. A healthy, well-fed baby is the real end goal here.
Breastfeeding success will depend on what type of reduction surgery you had. A lot of them cut the nerve and because of this, your brain won’t register that there is nipple stimulation and will eventually stop producing. The thing is that the first weeks, you will still have colostrum because of hormones. But after a couple of weeks, it’s breast stimulation and breast getting emptied that will take over the production signals. Because most moms don’t know if their nerve is cut off or not, you can pump a lot after birth to stimulate nipples, give breast to baby often, and see if your production stops after a couple of weeks. If not, you are good to go.
