Are there major differences between a vegan and a vegetarian?

Ain’t they supposed to mean the same? Like same set of individuals? I referred to a lady as a vegetarian, she corrected me that she’s a vegan. Oh okay lady, my bad. I tend to use both words to mean same thing. Any difference?

The two are not to be used in place of another because they’re two different kinds of people entirely. Vegans don’t eat anykind of animal originated product. This includes all kinds of meat, fish, milk, eggs and, in some cases, honey. They also do not use leather goods wherever possible. A vegan will not buy a car with leather seats. There is some argument about if being vegan is just about consumption. Some say a vegan has to be actively into animal rights. I think that is a seperate thing and can be counter productive as there are vegans who are environmentally driven, not animal cruelty driven.
A vegetarian does consume milk products and, outside of India and similar countries, eggs. Vegetarians do not eat fish! Those that do are piscatarians and can make the life of other vegetarians more difficult.

I’m actually a bit confused about the definition of vegan and vegetarian. I’ve always thought that a vegan didn’t use animal products at all. No animal based foods, no animal based clothing, no food or clothing produced by animals. A vegan is more than just someone who sticks to a specific diet.
There are several types of vegetarians. A strict vegetarian doesn’t eat animal based products, but can wear things like wool and leather. They eat the same things vegans eat. A lacto-ovo-vegetarian is a vegetarian that also eats eggs and dairy products. A pescatarian is a vegetarian that also eats fish. There may be other variations.
The main difference between a vegan and a vegetarian is vegetarianism is a diet, while veganism is a lifestyle which encompasses more than just diet.
