Even if you are working for free, they have the right to make reasonable deadlines and criticize your work because they are trying to make a product out of your work. Of course, in reverse, you’re allowed to make paying work your priority and put their pro-bono work last on your list of things to do. I think you need to make this clear to your friends if you do free work for them.

Generally a computer’s speed is determined by its hard drive. If you need that snappy performance then just any hard disk will be slow for you. Consider getting an SSD, you will find a significant difference in performance. If you weren’t looking for that snappy performance, but still find your laptop to be slow, make sure there is no program running in the background that uses a lot of your hard disk. You can find your disk usage in task manager. Generally antivirus use a lot of hard disk. If that is the case then try disabling your antivirus during heavy workload.
