I think that view comes from the stereotypical assumption that intelligent women are likely to be less attractive than average. It’s not accurate at all. The idea probably comes from intelligence being the primary thing that stands out for some. During the summer between 8th and 9th grades, I went to an advanced studies program at a local college. The girls there had the same distribution of attractiveness as the morons at my public schools. If I looked at the extremities, the least attractive were roughly the same as anywhere else, but a couple of the most attractive were insanely beyond what I had at school. It was just a random stroke of luck. I visited the following year and the distribution was normal.

Your child needs your unconditional love and support at this time because you need to find out why he or she does not want to go to school. You need to be empathetic and perhaps tell your child that you are trying to understand so that you can help him or her. If you felt the same way one time share that experience with your child. There are many reasons why your child does not want to attend and one that needs to be investigated is the possibility that he or she is being picked on or teased. You should make an appointment with his teacher to find out if there is any possibility that this is happening because bullying is often the reason. Unfortunately most of bullying that occurs takes place when no one is around but she or he may agree to keep an eye on your child to see if this is happening. Also ask that testing be done to see if he or she has the ability to keep up with classmates. Perhaps your child needs extra help.
