It is not overrated, in fact, it doesn’t get enough hype. It is a difficult job that requires a lot of skill, concentration and that can kill hundreds if not thousands of people with a mistake and cause tens of millions of dollars in damage. The job also requires you to go into debt to start off work at some of the worst times to work in a high stress environment no matter the weather or condition of your equipment. Once you get in the air you can’t just change planes because this one doesn’t work. Once you start the job you have to finish it.
I have not yet met a pilot who regrets doing it, or say they won’t be doing the same thing if they can start over again. Yes it is a dream job but I’m sure there are other jobs out there that beats it, it’s just that lifestyle wise nothing comes close to it. I have to say not everyone will have the aptitude for it though.
